Owners: Far West Communities.

Project Size/Scope: 42 homes, varying in size from 2,188-2,671 square feet.

Project Description: PetersenDean was selected as the solar roofing contractor by Far West Communities to install roofing and solar on the new homes at Murano in Palm Springs.

This new, 42 home community offers a number of green features to meet California Title 24 compliance standards. The homes range is size from 2,188 to 2,671 square feet and feature green technologies including tank-less hot water heating systems, drought-tolerant drip irrigation, variable speed pool pumps and Low-E glass windows, to name a few.

Murano embodies a mid-century modern architecture with window shadow boxes and extended rooflines on the exterior. The homes’ flat roofs work well for the solar panels, which are completely hidden.

The solar roofing contributes significantly to the project sustainability features, most importantly to the annual energy savings for each home, which come with a 4 kw solar system standard. Electricity savings are projected to be about $1,980 a year, or $165 a month and homeowners further benefit from federal tax credits that total about $2,500 due to solar roofing. The estimated five-year solar savings can total up to $10,296 compared to homes without solar.
